why personal style matters

welcome to the Sunstruck Style blog!

I’m super stoked to be connecting with you. And thank you so much for being here!

My name is Kathryn, and I’m the creative behind Sunstruck Style. I’m a stylist and pro-thrifter, and I’m so excited to share my style philosophy with you and to just talk about all things style.

my personal style journey

While I’ve always been into expressive, creative style, I would say that my stye journey really took off about 10 years ago, when I decided to exclusively thrift all of my clothes. I found that thrifting forced me (in the best possible way) to create my own authentic looks. I couldn’t rely on a curated store, so everything came from my own perspective.

Fast forward to today, and while my day to day looks vary greatly, one thing remains constant - each look is my own.

A huge reason why I wanted to start this blog is because I’ve had so many women compliment my outfits, then proceed to tell me that they could just never pull it off. And I hate that because it’s just so far from the truth.

If you’ve ever felt like you weren’t confident enough to pull something off, or that it just wouldn’t look good on you for whatever reason…

I created this blog for you!

My ultimate goal for this blog is to help you become your own stylist, and show you that you can wear whatever you want - that as long as you feel good in something, that’s all that matters.

No matter what your style goals are - whether you just want to be a little more confident or you want to completely overhaul your wardrobe - I want to help you get there.

Okay, let’s dive in!

my personal style philosophy

For this first post, I wanted to share my personal style philosophy with you. Because for me, style is about so much more than just your clothes.

In my opinion, when we talk about style we focus too much on the do’s and the dont’s.

We get caught up in things like, whether or not this piece goes with that piece, if this piece flatters our body type, if this color is for me, if this pattern is too bold, if people will judge me for wearing something wild and bold…

You know, all that stuff that we’ve been told about style for like, ever.

But when we talk about style this way, it heightens any insecurities we may have and stops us from having the style confidence that all of us want.

So lets take a step back. Take a deep breath. Re-group. And start to think about style in a completely new way.

I believe that style is 2 things:

  1. It’s a daily affirmation & practice of self-worth. I think that style and just the act of getting ready in the morning is the perfect way to practice self care and to start to build your sense of self-worth. I want you to start thinking about style as a daily affirmation, as a continual daily practice to not only recognize your self-worth but to also help build and grow it too.

  1. It’s creative expression. Style is supposed to be fun. It’s supposed to be limitless. There shouldn’t be any rules save for the ones you create for yourself. I want to show you how much fun style can be, how liberating it is to dress for yourself and to go wild with it. To show the world who are just by what you wear.

Those 2 concepts are what, I think, style is really all about: it’s about valuing yourself enough to take care of yourself and take up space, and to just have fun and get creative with, to show the world your true self.

And I also think that, when you look at style this way it takes the pressure off of feeling like you have to be super confident right now, to understanding that with time, style confidence will come.

confidence isn’t (necessarily) the goal

Here’s the truth babe - style confidence is a result, not a feeling / state of being.

You don’t get good style from being confident - you become more confident in yourself & your sense of style the more that you explore style and try new things.

Style is a continual practice for me, and to be honest, I don’t always feel confident all the time.

It’s anything but a linear journey, and I want to be clear about that. Even on my own personal style journey, I’ve had my ups and downs.

But I always come back to style being a way to take care of and show up for myself, and it honestly helps me work through those harder times.

I hope you found this first blog helpful! We’re going to dive into these concepts in way more depth in upcoming episodes, but I just wanted to give you a taste of what I’m all about.

Can’t wait to connect with you again!
